Everything on this page is moving online. No printing, no posting, no waiting on the mail. The Standardbred Showing Passport is now a digital card that lives in your phone's wallet, and the forms behind it are being rebuilt to match.
The passport register is starting again from scratch
The move to digital passports is a clean start. The old records are not being carried across, so every horse needs a fresh application, including horses that have held a passport for years. Your horse will be issued a new passport number for the 2026/27 season.
That also means any change of ownership you have already sent us will not be processed. Nothing has gone wrong and you have not been overlooked. There is simply no old record left to transfer. Whoever owns the horse now should apply for the passport in their own name, and the horse starts clean.
Passport and ownership forms
Three forms sit behind the digital passport. One is open now, the other two are on their way.
Standardbred Showing Passport application
The passport is your horse's identity document for the show ring, issued as a digital card you add to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It carries the horse's name, breeding, sex, colour, brand and microchip, your name as owner, and the season it is valid for. Stewards can check it from your phone at the gate.
Before you start, have these ready:
- Your horse's registered name, and its show name if it uses one
- A clear near-side and off-side photo of the horse, standing square in good light
- Brand and microchip details, exactly as they appear on the HRNZ record
- Your contact details and a card for the fee
- Apply and pay. The fee is taken at the time you submit, so there is nothing to chase afterwards. Your bank may add a quick verification step before the form finishes. That is normal.
- We check the details. Every application is cross-checked against the HRNZ horse record for colour, markings, brand and microchip. If the HRNZ record is wrong or out of date, sort that out first or the application will hold up.
- We approve it. Applications are processed weekly, so allow time before entries close for your next show. You get an email with a link to add the card to your phone.
- Add it to your wallet. On iPhone, tap the link on the phone itself. On Android, copy the link and open it in your phone's browser rather than tapping it inside the email.
The fee is the same whenever you join. Every card expires on 31 August at the end of the showing season, so a horse passported in June gets the same expiry as one passported in September. Renewals will be invoiced rather than re-applied for, and your passport number stays with the horse.
Change of ownership
The change of ownership form is built and works exactly like the passport application. You fill it in, we check it, we approve it. The difference is what happens next.
Rather than issuing a brand new passport, the horse keeps its passport number. The new owner's details succeed the previous owner's in our master record, the card is reissued to the new owner against that same number, and the previous owner's digital card is voided so it can no longer be used at a show. The horse's showing history stays attached to the horse, where it belongs.
We plan to release this publicly later in the year. In the meantime, if a horse with a 2026/27 digital passport changes hands, email us and we will send you the form link directly.

The lease form is built. It records a lease against a horse that already holds a digital Standardbred Showing Passport, so the register shows who is currently showing the horse and until when. The registered owner does not change and the horse keeps its passport number.
Because the register is starting again from scratch, almost no horse has a digital passport yet. That changes the order things need to happen in for this first season.
If the horse already has a 2026/27 digital passport, the lease form is all you need. It asks for the passport number, the horse's name, the registered owner's name and email address, your name, email and mobile as lessee, and the first and last day of the lease.
If the horse does not have a passport yet, the registered owner needs to apply for one first. The passport application is for registered owners, so it has to come from them rather than from you as the lessee. Once the passport has been issued, the lease can be recorded against it.
Either way, we email the registered owner when a lease is submitted, setting out the horse, the passport number, your name as lessee and the end date. We do not accept a lease until the registered owner replies to that email confirming the terms. If we do not hear back from them within seven days the lease is not recorded and the fee is refunded.
We will open the form once the first passports are through. In the meantime, if you are leasing a horse for the coming season, email us and we will make sure you have what you need for your show.
