Southern Standardbred Breeders’ Association (SSBA)
The Southern Standardbred Breeders’ Association (SSBA) proudly represents the standardbred breeding community of Southland and the lower South Island. As one of the three independent regional affiliates of the New Zealand Standardbred Breeders’ Association (NZSBA), SSBA plays an important role in shaping the national conversation around breeding while supporting its members at a local level. Two representatives from SSBA sit on the NZSBA National Executive, ensuring the southern voice is well represented in governance and advocacy.
Southland has long held a reputation as a powerhouse of grassroots breeding, producing horses known for their toughness, soundness, and consistency. From boutique family breeders to larger-scale commercial operations, the region has contributed significantly to the national foal crop and played a key role in developing some of the country’s most successful bloodlines.
The SSBA’s primary purpose is to support and advance the interests of standardbred breeders within its regional catchment — which spans from the Waitaki River south — and to contribute meaningfully to the growth and quality of the standardbred breed in New Zealand.
Currently, the SSBA has around 140 financial members, many of whom are active in both breeding and ownership. Through their involvement with SSBA, these members automatically become part of the wider NZSBA network, connecting them with national-level initiatives, funding opportunities, and policy development.
