NZ Leading Sires by Black Type Winners
NZ Leading Sires by Black Type Winners
This ranks stallions on black type races won, not on stakes. It is a different question from the sires' premiership and it often gives a different answer. A premiership can be won on one enormous season from one horse. This table asks a plainer question: how often did a son or daughter of this stallion win a race that carries black type?
Across the five seasons from 2021 to 2025, 490 Group and Listed races were won by the progeny of just 48 stallions. Twelve of those managed a single win. The top five account for more than half the list between them. That concentration is the single most important fact on this page, and it is worth sitting with before anything else.
At the head of it sits Bettor's Delight with 113 black type winners, including 55 at Group 1. To put that in proportion, the next best Group 1 tally over the same period is seventeen. He leads every column on the page: the juveniles, the open ranks, the colts and horses, the geldings and the mares. There is no age bracket and no sex where another stallion has done more. We are unlikely to see a record like it again.
Split the table by gait and it becomes a fairer contest, because pacing and trotting sires are never competing for the same races. Over five seasons the pacers produced 295 black type races and the trotters 195. On the trotting side Muscle Hill leads with forty and Majestic Son thirty nine, with Father Patrick on twenty five and Love You on seventeen. Read that way, the trotting premiership is genuinely close, which the combined list completely hides.
The age and sex columns are where the table earns its keep, because they show what kind of sire a stallion actually is. Father Patrick is second in the country for two year old black type winners with sixteen, but has just one at open level, which is exactly what you would expect of a young sire whose crops are still coming through. Muscle Hill is the mirror image, thirty three of his forty wins in open company and none at two. Captaintreacherous has twenty six of his thirty six wins from fillies and mares. Two stallions with similar totals can be doing entirely different jobs, and only these columns tell you which.
Season by season the top has been remarkably stable. Bettor's Delight led in 2021 with thirty two and again in 2025 with twenty eight. What has changed beneath him is the trotting order, where Muscle Hill headed the count in 2021 and Majestic Son, What The Hill and Father Patrick have come through since.
Counted here are Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races only. Feature races are excluded, so the four grade columns sum exactly to the total.

Pick a season, or leave it on All to see the five seasons aggregated. The aggregate view is where the long-run picture appears; a single season can be swung by one good horse.
Filter by gait. Pacing and trotting sires do not compete for the same races, so ranking them together flatters whichever code had more black type that year. The gait view is the fairer comparison.
Every column sorts. Click a heading once to sort by it, again to reverse. Sort by G1 for the stallions producing at the top level, by 2YO for the juvenile sires, by F&M for those leaving the fillies. The sort holds as you change season, so you can watch a ranking move year to year.
Read across, not just down. The By Age and By Sex blocks show what kind of sire a stallion is, not just how many winners he has left. A total on its own tells you far less than the shape behind it.
The bar under each total is scaled to the leader, so the gap at the top reads at a glance.
