North Island Standardbred Breeders’ Association (NISBA)

The North Island Standardbred Breeders’ Association (NISBA) proudly represents breeders from across the North Island, working to strengthen, support, and advocate for those contributing to the future of the standardbred breed. As an independent affiliate of the New Zealand Standardbred Breeders’ Association (NZSBA), NISBA appoints two representatives to the NZSBA National Executive, ensuring the needs and perspectives of North Island breeders are well represented at a national level.

Home to a wide spectrum of breeders — from multi-generational operations to enthusiastic newcomers — the North Island is a vital contributor to New Zealand’s breeding landscape. With several prominent studs, a strong ownership base, and a growing number of young participants entering the industry, NISBA is committed to both preserving tradition and encouraging innovation.

NISBA’s primary mission is to advance the interests of standardbred breeders, improve the quality and commercial viability of the breed, and provide meaningful value to its members through education, advocacy, and recognition.

With around 125 financial members, and many more involved through breeding partnerships, NISBA remains a vibrant, connected, and forward-looking community. All members of NISBA are also members of NZSBA, ensuring they are plugged into both regional and national breeder initiatives.

What We Do

NISBA actively supports its members through a range of impactful initiatives and events:

  • Annual North Island Breeders Awards Dinner
Held at Alexandra Park, this prestigious event celebrates the achievements of North Island breeders, recognising Group Race winners, standout mares, and emerging talent. It’s a night of pride, connection, and reflection for the breeding community.
  • Stallion Parades & Industry Field Days
NISBA organises or supports events showcasing both established and emerging stallions in the region, providing breeders with insight, networking opportunities, and up-close access to breeding options ahead of the season.
  • Support of the North Island Filly of the Year Series
NISBA proudly backs the performance of pacing fillies through this important series, advocating for more opportunities for fillies and mares and helping increase their long-term value in the breeding barn.
  • Education & Industry Engagement
Throughout the year, NISBA facilitates seminars and breeder forums in collaboration with NZSBA and HRNZ, offering updates on breeding trends, veterinary insights, and commercial opportunities — with a particular focus on attracting and supporting younger or first-time breeders.
  • Advocacy at All Levels
From sale preparation advice and mare retention strategies to industry consultation on breeding policies, NISBA is an active voice in decision-making processes that affect breeders — both regionally and nationally.

NISBA continues to play a vital role in preserving the legacy of North Island breeding while adapting to meet the evolving challenges and opportunities of today’s harness racing environment. Whether you breed one mare or twenty, NISBA is here to represent you, connect you, and help your breeding ambitions thrive.
