Project Stamina report released

A major new report outlining the proposed future shape of New Zealand’s racing and training venue network was released on Tuesday by Harness Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and TAB NZ.

A major new report outlining the proposed future shape of New Zealand’s racing and training venue network was released on Tuesday by Harness Racing New Zealand, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and TAB NZ.

Project Stamina brings together an independently prepared National Masterplan, developed by consultancy RCP, with One Equine View, the shared position adopted by HRNZ and NZTR on how the report’s recommendations could be progressed across both codes.

The project examines whether New Zealand’s existing racing infrastructure remains aligned with the location of horses, participants and racing activity, and proposes concentrating future investment across a smaller network of higher-quality and more financially sustainable facilities.

The recommendations carry potentially significant implications for a number of harness racing clubs, training centres and communities. Importantly, their release begins a further period of engagement, assessment and implementation planning. The recommendations do not, in themselves, represent final decisions to cease racing at a venue, close a facility or dispose of property.

NZSBA encourages breeders and industry participants to read the complete report and consider what the proposed infrastructure changes could mean for the accessibility, regional footprint and long-term sustainability of harness racing.
