Oaks winner descends from one-eyed mare

A one-eyed, unbroken Out To Win mare named Out Of Time founded a dynasty that produced the Rock N Roll World filly Rocknroll Willow, the impressive winner of the $40,000 Woodlands Stud Tasmanian Oaks at Hobart last Sunday.
A weanling purchase that changed everything
West Melton beef cattle farmer and horseman Barry Ward, who has bred extensively from this family over four decades, takes up the story.
"I bought Out Of Time off the great old horseman Clem Scott as a weanling. I was working for him at the time. She was from a gun family in the stud book," Ward said.
"I leased the mare to Max Bowden and he got the first foal, but I had all the foals after that."
Out Of Time's second issue, to the cover of Clever Innocence, was Time's On My Side.
"She won 10 races and was one of the best mares in NZ of her time," he said.
Time's On My Side became the dam of nine winners including Carl Lewis, who took a record of 1:52 in America, Child In Time (10 wins), Bird Of Paradise (13 wins) and the Victorian provincial winner Bon Jovi.
Daughters breed on
Several of Time's On My Side's daughters bred on with marked success.
Child In Time is the dam of six winners including the Group 1 $130,000 Caduceus Club 2YO Classic winner Paradise City, After Midnight left three winners and Free Bird produced the multiple Albion Park trotting winner Call Me The Breeze.
Child In Time was also the grand-dam of the dual Western Australian Group 3 winner and Breeders Crown placegetter Angel Of Harlem and the Canberra Cup winner Justa Little Bit (1:49.4).
"Angel Of Harlem is undoubtedly the best one of the breed. She had high speed and was a good stayer," Ward stated.
An Oaks winner from an exported branch
Another daughter of Child In Time was the Bettor's Delight mare Nothing Else Matters.
"I sold her at the yearling sales. She won at her only start in NZ and ended up in Adelaide," Ward said.
Nothing Else Matters won 14 races in South Australia including 13 at Globe Derby Park, and at stud left six winners, five in 2:00, from seven foals, headed up by the newly crowned Oaks heroine Rocknroll Willow, the winner of eight of her 14 starts and almost $60,000.
"Every mare in the family can leave a real horse. That is why we keep doing it," Barry said.
"It's been life changing really."
The family today
Ward and his wife Anne-Maree are currently breeding from five mares from the Out Of Time family, three of whom are in foal.
They are Times Are A Changin, who is in foal to Downbytheseaside, and Going To California and Hey Tonight, who are both carrying positive tests to Lather Up.
