Breeding Snippets | Late March Performers and Pedigrees in Focus
25 Mar 2026
Another strong week on the track has shone a light on several of New Zealand’s most proven and emerging maternal families, with standout performances from both pacers and trotters reinforcing the depth, consistency, and enduring influence of elite broodmares across the breeding landscape.
Texas Ranger continues Banner legacy
These days, having sold his farm, Dennis Moore of Banner Bloodstock is enjoying retirement, but his long-standing passion for the harness game remains as strong as ever. In Texas Ranger, a three-year-old by Bettor’s Delight from Caitlin Banner, he appears to have another highly promising prospect following an impressive debut at Addington.
Bred by Moore, Caitlin Banner (by Washington VC) is from Corporate Banner, making her a half-sister to NZ Cup winner Mainland Banner, who won 17 of 22 starts and over $685,000. That victory provided trainer Robert Dunn with his only success to date in New Zealand’s greatest race.
Moore sold Mainland Banner as a yearling in 2003 and, more recently, sold a half-brother to his latest winner in Roman Banner (by Art Major). On both occasions, the buyers appear to have secured outstanding value.
< i>Texas Ranger hails from a deep family, being related to five winners including Trojan Banner, a 37-race winner across three countries. Mainland Banner herself left 11 winners from 13 foals, headed by Rocker Band (13 wins, $360,000), whose Bettor’s Delight colt sold for $130,000 at the recent Christchurch yearling sales.
Breeding success runs deep in the Moore family, with Dennis’ father Dudley standing the influential sire Lumber Dream, now four generations back in the pedigree of Texas Ranger.
Prestigious emerging from elite trotting family
Prestigious (by Majestic Son from Prestine) has long shown promise and is now beginning to realise that potential as a four-year-old. A dominant trial winner at Rangiora, he has now won three of his seven starts, with two placings, for owner-breeder Jenny Butt and trainer Jonny Cox.
This is a family that has delivered consistently for Butt and the late Don McKenzie. Prestine, a five-race winner, has now produced three winners from her first three foals, with Master Class (five wins) and Mister (three wins) preceding Prestigious.
There is further depth to come, with fillies by Majestic Son (two-year-old), Dancinginthedark M (yearling) and Oscar Bonavena (weanling) still to emerge.
From the influential Stimulus line, the family traces back to Abundant, a broodmare who produced seven winners and established a powerful maternal line. It is the same family as millionaire trotter Vulcan and the outstanding Genius, underlining its enduring quality.
Got The Chocolates taps into iconic Cullen family
Got The Chocolates continues to enhance his growing reputation, and his recent 2600m performance in 3:08.7 only adds to the excitement. By Art Major from Kate Black (by Bettor’s Delight), he represents one of New Zealand’s most celebrated pacing families.
Nearly three decades ago, this family produced two of the sport’s greats in Kate’s First, a 19-race winner including an Auckland Cup, and her half-brother Christian Cullen, who would go on to become a breed-shaping sire.
While Kate’s First left nine performers from ten foals, none matched her brilliance. Kate Black, her final foal, has now produced Got The Chocolates, a horse who has earned over $600,000 from 11 wins and 12 placings.
The family continues to be active in the sales ring, with a half-brother by King Of Swing selling for $70,000, while a full sister, Katie Royal, was passed in at the latest Christchurch sale.
From humble beginnings, tracing back to Pleasant Franco, this family is a reminder that elite performers can emerge from the most unassuming origins.
Arma Hunter carries famous Armalight bloodline
Arma Hunter may not have matched the times of some of his contemporaries, but his progression suggests he is a horse on the rise. The son of American Ideal from Arma Courage has now won three of his five starts for the Dunn stable and looks set for further success.
He represents the renowned Armalight family, one of the most commercially recognised lines in recent decades. His dam Arma Courage was a three-time winner and has already produced the talented Arma Indie (11 wins, $177,000).
There is further depth in the family, with Roll With Eunice (10 wins) and younger progeny including Arma Arlo and two full sisters still to come through.
The second dam Arma Class left 10 winners and is a half-sister to NZ Cup winner Armalight, reinforcing the strength and consistency of this celebrated maternal line.
The Lazarus Effect highlights enduring Mayfair family
The Lazarus Effect continues to build an impressive record, now boasting 10 wins and six placings from 16 starts. As a son of Lazarus, he is a strong advertisement for his sire, while also drawing attention to one of Mid Canterbury’s most productive families.
His dam Brook Street, by Art Major, is part of a growing trend that suggests the sire may become just as influential as a broodmare sire. Bred by Martin Pierson, the gelding was later sold to Bruce Carter, who has enjoyed considerable success with the family.
The second dam Meet Me In Mayfair produced four winners from five foals, including The Dorchester and Ebury Street. The latter has since entered the broodmare ranks, further extending the family.
Tracing back to English Elegance and ultimately the great producer Coo Doo, this is a line steeped in history, with generations of high-quality performers continuing to emerge.
Habibti Sadie delivers standout weekend double
It was a standout weekend for broodmare Habibti Sadie (by Pegasus Spur from Ten To One), with two winners across separate meetings.
At Auckland, Son Of The Cleaner (by Love You) recorded his fourth win, while two days later at Methven, Blue Collar (by Tactical Landing) made it two wins from two starts.
Already the dam of multiple winners including Magic Dash and Tactical Bid, Habibti Sadie continues to establish herself as a highly effective producer. She currently has a two-year-old by Wishing Stone and is back in foal to Tactical Approach.
Her dam Ten To One, a six-race winner from 123 starts, has left a lasting legacy, producing outstanding mares such as Habibti and Habibti Ivy, both of whom have excelled at stud.
From this family also comes Habibi Inta, and with Love You emerging as a leading broodmare sire in the trotting ranks, the future of this line looks exceptionally bright.
